Area: privately owned Gondwana Cañon
Park, which is rich in game, and Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.
Day 1:
Morning drive to the main lookout point at the edge of the Fish River
Canyon. Carrying just a light backpack we descend into the 500 metre
gorge at Hiker’s Point, slightly to the north. Each step down
takes us further back into periods
of Earth’s history to which the rock layers around us bear
witness. After reaching the Fish River bed we hike upstream in almost
untouched wilderness. Picnic in the wilds. In the afternoon we arrive
at Cañon Camp – and are reunited with our luggage
which the mules have brought on a different route.
While the cook is busily preparing supper we are enjoying a drink at
the campfire. The night is spent in a tent or in the open in the Fish
River Canyon.
Day 2:
After a substantial breakfast we continue upstream. A change of scenery
awaits us behind every bend. Now and then we come across large, deep
potholes which are suitable for a swim. We exit the canyon at the
‘Iron Gate’ and turn into a tributary. Gondwana
Cañon Park is rich in game and with a little luck we spot
kudu, mountain zebra and klipspringer leaping from rock to rock like
chamois. Lunchtime picnic; arrival at Cañon Roadhouse in the
afternoon.
