Arrival: Sunday evening, dinner and accommodation at
Cañon House north-west of Cañon Roadhouse in Gondwana
Cañon Park (transfer from Windhoek by prior arrangement)
Day 1 (15 to 20 km):
After breakfast we load the mules and are on our way. We follow the
course of the Gaap River which is fed by springs. This part of Gondwana
Cañon Park is rich in game and we may encounter kudu,
klipspringer or mountain zebra; with a little luck we will see
waterbirds like the
Hamerkop or African Fish Eagle. Lunchtime picnic. In the afternoon we
cross the Gaap Canyon. Our camp is pitched at the Fish River confluence
next to Gaap Fountain.
We enjoy a drink at the campfire while our cook is taking care of supper.
Day 2 (10 to 15 km):
After a substantial breakfast we make a short detour to a lookout point
at the edge of the canyon. We find abstract rock engravings on smooth,
blue dolomite – traces left by Namibia’s original
inhabitants thousands of years ago. Then we explore the canyon and
continue down the Fish River which bears water only after good
rainfalls. Behind every bend a different picture presents itself.
Patches of river pebbles are followed by slabs of rock and sand dunes.
Picnic in a shady spot; dinner at the campfire. The camp is pitched
beneath a steep rock face in the Fish River Canyon.
Day 3 (10 to 15 km):
With every bend the gorges become deeper and the rock faces steeper.
Massive layers of rock reveal dramatic chapters from Earth’s
history. Lunchtime picnic
in a shady spot.
Now and then we come across large, deep potholes which are suited for a
swim or for catching Fish River carp. In the afternoon we arrive at
Cañon Camp.
Supper at the campfire, the night is spent in the tent or in the open.
Day 4 (about 10 km):
A substantial breakfast fortifies us for the highlight of the
tour: climbing up to the rim of the canyon, some 500 metres above us.
While our cook takes a shortcut with the mules, we continue in the
riverbed for another couple of bends. The way up is wedged between the
rocks of a small, dry tributary and then runs along stony slopes. Every
so often we stop to marvel at the view. Lunchtime picnic. We surface at
the rim of the canyon at Hiker’s Point, north of the main lookout
point. Transfer to Cañon Roadhouse (or one of the other
accommodation facilities of the Cañon Collection) and end of the
tour.
This tour can also be arranged in reverse order.
For accommodation after the tour we recommend the facilities of the
Cañon Collection. Transfer to Windhoek by prior arrangement.
