Experience the Fish River Canyon – from closest quarters and
unhampered by gear! Novel hiking tours (2 to 4 days) in the
wilderness area north of the main lookout point are now
offered by Canyon Mule Trails. Participants savour the stark beauty of
almost untouched nature with only the barest essentials in their
backpack, as all the luggage and equipment is carried by mules.
A trained guide points out and explains rock formations which are
millions of years old, as well as the unique fauna and flora. Nights
are spent in tents or in the open, depending on personal
choice and outside temperatures.
The hiking trail has a total length of some 60 km and runs north of the
main lookout point through the wilderness area of state-owned
Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park and privately owned Gondwana Cañon Park. Fish River Canyon, the second largest
canyon on earth, is situated in the Succulent Karoo (the most
biodiverse desert on earth). It is a landscape characterized by up to
500 metre gorges winding with many twists and turns through layers of
rock which are millions of years old. The flora includes unique plants
like the quiver tree, candelabra euphorbia or tamarisk; there is also
plenty of game, e.g. mountain zebra, klipspringer, kudu, duiker,
springbok and ostrich.
